To rail fans, Altoona is paradise. The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark is an engineering marvel; dozens of trains round the curve each day. The Railroaders National Museum, with three floors of exhibits and interactive displays, includes a rail yard with actual rolling stock and special exhibits for kids. A gallery of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art features train and nature photography, and the Altoona Railfest provides long and short excursions. The area features plenty of lodging, shopping, and outdoor fun for tourists.

Serious biking, in Altoona? Submitted by: Jeremy Last summer I had to go to Altoona for work. I'd been there before so I wasn't expecting anything exciting. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled into one of the largest pro cycling events in the country. It was quite a spectacle. If you ever find yourself near Altoona in August, I highly recommend you check it out! |
