 PA Stories

Back in the day, driving in the mountains was a little too exciting
Submitted by: Ed
While I moved out of Pennsylvania over 30 years ago, I have many good memories of “only in PA”. Three Rivers Art Festivals, brilliant Fall colors, flyfishing for trout and catching my Irish Setter, and my mother’s Pittsburgh history narrative during a party boat ride up the Allegheny. But these stories pale to the advancements made in highway travel. In the 60’s, Pennsylvania had three lane roadways with the middle lane used for passing in both directions. In the flat plains states, this configuration may have been acceptable; but in the hills of PA, it added adventure to roadway travel. Consider driving home from Penn State at dusk on Route 22, passing a slower vehicle in my underpowered Corvair, and seeing two semis side by side coming over the crest of the hill in front of me. If not for the driver on my right moving onto the shoulder, I would have been an ornament next to the Mack bulldog. Since then, many improvements have made Pennsylvania a beautiful state to drive in. Now, if we can only get the deer on I80 to stay on the shoulder.
