This weekend brought the first short track cross country event to the Mid-Atlantic Super Series. Before the event, some of the team members decided to stretch their legs and represent visitPA.com at the Off Road Duathlon and U.S. Open 40k road time trial. How cool is it to live in a region where one can compete in two disciplines at two venues in one day?
At the time trial in Middletown, Pa., Mike Hebe raced the Elite category and came in 6th with a personal best time for the 40k. Ray and Nancy Adams decided to pair up for the Hibernia Duathlon and prove that they are, indeed, the fastest off road couple around. The two handily won the duo category and narrowly missed the overall win for the whole Duathlon.
In the Expert B short track event, Nancy Adams battled it out with the leading 45+ men and rode a very strong race to finish with a 3rd place overall, winning the women's STXC.
In the Expert A short track, the visitPA.com team was represented by Ray Adams, Rob Lichtenwalner, and Mike Hebe. Just before the Elite STXC, the heavens opened and dumped rain on the course and riders as they warmed up. After a safety delay to let the lightning pass for good—or so they thought—the race was ready to begin. Right before the gun went off, the heavens opened again. The race was off.
A good start saw Ray and Mike sitting 2nd and 3rd, with Rob just behind. A crash at the front put Mike solo for the rest of the first lap until Ray passed at the start/finish in pursuit of the race leader. Halfway through lap two, Mike put in an attack to go off in pursuit of the leader. He was reeled in, and Ray put in another strong effort. Halfway through the third lap, Mike attacked again, and this time, it stuck. He was gaining on 1st but lost time on the course's climb. The rains were dumping at this point, but there was no lightning.
Lap four started with Mike in 2nd, Ray battling with two others for 3rd, and Rob in 6th. Lap five saw little change in the race; however, Mother Nature changed her mind and delivered a strong thunderclap with lightning in the distance that stopped the race. Mike Hebe ended the day in 2nd, with strong help from teammate Ray Adams, who finished 5th. Rob Lichtenwalner ended the race in 6th, with visions of getting back to his strong suit of 24 HOURS racing, not 15 MINUTES.
The team would like to thank all of its generous sponsors for their support. Without this support, we would not be able to achieve the results that we do. Stay tuned for more racing as the team tackles races in coming weeks.
