Hiking is more fun with the crunch of leaves underfoot! The cooler weather means you'll stay as comfortable as can be, even if the going gets rough. And, of course, the scenery can't be beat - especially in the Pennsylvania Wilds. That's why we've set our three-day hiking roadtrip in this vast region of the Commonwealth renowned for its rugged terrain, unspoiled mountain vistas, and spectacular fall foliage. It's the ideal place for a fall hike, so lace up those boots and get going!

Quehanna Trail

>>You'll start off your hiking roadtrip near Penfield, on the lovely Quehanna Trail. This loop trail runs 58 miles through the Moshannon State Forest and 17 miles through the Elk State Forest, so you know you'll see plenty of bright fall leaves (and maybe even an elk or two). Better yet, this trail is accessible to foot traffic only, so you won't have to deal with cars or ATVs---it's just you and Mother Nature. Primitive camping is allowed; please remember to pack in, pack out, and leave no trace. Moshannon State Forest boasts 244 miles of trail in all, some of which are marked for mountain biking and horseback riding. The Elk State Forest covers 200,000 acres and offers plenty of hiking trails as well.

Donut Hole Trail

Ya gotta love the name! The Donut Hole Trail offers more than 90 miles of moderate, blazed cross-country trail for hikers, bikers, and joggers. Starting off near Renovo, which is practically the Pennsylvania state capital of fall foliage, the trail runs along the northern edge of the Sproul State Forest and ends up at Hyner Run State Park. The Sproul State Forest covers more than 300,000 acres; Hyner Run Park is entirely within it. If you happen to enjoy fishing, Hyner Run is a great little stream for brook and brown trout.

Loyalsock Trail

The 60-mile Loyalsock Trail winds up your hiking roadtrip. Starting off in Williamsport, this trail is truly one of the state's most beautiful. Meandering streams and mountain vistas abound; you'll stop more than once to marvel at the gorgeous fall scenery. Check out the Loyalsock Creek as you hike---it's stocked with trout, and the cold mountain water makes for good fishing all year long. You might also see daredevil kayakers and whitewater rafters! If you follow the trail the whole distance, you'll end up at Worlds End State Park, a lovely place in the Northeast Pennsylvania Mountains Region offering rustic cabins, camping, and a swimming hole.
