The Northeast Pennsylvania Mountains Region is chock-full of wildlife, so if you love communing with cuddly critters, this is the place for you! The area also has its share of not-so-cuddly wildlife, so watch out for bears, eagles, and other animals who know who's boss. This three-day roadtrip will take you up around Stroudsburg and beyond to the forests and nature centers that some of Pennsylvania's wildest residents call home. Whatever you do, don't forget your camera---between the animals and the spectacular foliage, you're gonna need it!

Eagle Institute

>>>>>>>>>>Your roadtrip gets off to a soaring start in Lackawaxen, where more than 100 bald eagles take up residence along the Upper Delaware River every year. They come here for the excellent fishing, so if you're of like mind, you might want to bring your tackle. The Eagle Institute offers guided habitat tours, maps, and information. Volunteers are around to help you spot eagles; they'll also answer your questions. The big migratory influx happens a little closer to winter, but fall is an excellent time to check out the growing population of year-round residents and, of course, the changing leaves. But please remember to be quiet and respectful---the eagles are raising their young in early fall and don't take kindly to human disruption.

Carbon County Environmental Education Center

Today brings you to the Carbon County Environmental Education Center, where you'll see a spectacular collection of live birds of prey. This attraction is also a Pennsylvania-licensed wildlife rehabilitation center, so you may have an opportunity to see some of the state's wild residents up close while they recuperate. The center is housed in an old converted dairy barn; it occupies about 70 acres of woodland, wetland, and meadow habitat within Mauch Chunk Lake Park, so you're sure to see a good cross-section of Pennsylvania wildlife.

State Game Lands and Promised Land State Park

Your last day begins at State Game Lands 127. As you might expect, this area is teeming with wildlife. Keep quiet and watch for white-tailed deer and black bear. If you visit during hunting season, keep your wits about you and be sure to wear safety clothing. The rugged 25,527-acre areas is home to creatures great and small, so don't forget to look to the ground for chipmunks and to the sky for birds of prey. The fall foliage is pretty spectacular, too. If you have time, head over to State Game Lands 180, which covers more than 11,000 acres near Promised Land State Park. The park itself is beautiful in the fall, and it offers two lakes for fishing and about 50 miles of hiking trails---a perfect place for wildlife watching!
