Worlds End State Park

As its name suggests, Worlds End State Park is located in a dramatic and mountainous area of the state, where visitors can enjoy sprawling vistas and swirling whitewater. A valley shoulders the serpentine portion of Loyalsock Creek to create the kind of rugged scenery that's irresistible to hikers. Everybody loves this park's unmatched beauty, particularly during the fall. If you prefer to drive rather than hike, seek out Canyon Vista, an impressive overlook reachable from Mineral Spring and Cold Run Roads.

But it's more fun to explore the surrounding wilderness by trail. Two excellent day-hike trails are the Double Run Nature Trail and the Loyalsock Trail to Alpine Falls. Make sure you visit High Knob Overlook for an incredible view. If you like water sports, Loyalsock Creek rages with whitewater throughout the year, and it's perfect for trout fishing and kayaking. (Whitewater boaters should call ahead about water level conditions.

Pinchot Trail Northern Loop

The 23-mile Pinchot Trail System explores the verdant Lackawanna State Forest and the Pocono Plateau, including an observation tower and a spring. In October, the hike offers spectacular views of autumn colors. An experienced hiker could complete Pinchot in a day; however, the path is strenuous. For those preferring a leisurely pace, camping overnight is permitted along the trail, or you can map a shorter hike using connector trails. There's a township road cutting through the center of the system, so many one-day hikers do the north loop and the south loop on separate days. Trail maps are available from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Nearby, Steamtown USA is the only national park solely dedicated to railroad history, created to interpret the story of mainline railroading between 1850 and 1950. The park occupies more than 40 acres of former railyard and includes historic railroad buildings. The Steamtown National Historic Site also operates three steam locomotives.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area showcases a vital watershed that offers exceptional river recreation and stunning ravines.

Straddling the Pennsylvania-New Jersey shore of the Delaware Wild and Scenic River, this popular 70,000-acre area boasts an acclaimed residential environmental education center, breathtaking waterfalls, and picturesque flora and fauna. Three hiking trails led to ponds, waterfalls, a fossil bed, mixed woods, streams, and rocky ledges. Dingman's Falls Nature Trail is a fully accessible, .75-mile loop that includes the 80-foot Silver Thread Falls and the 130-foot Dingman's Falls before heading back to the visitors' center.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

You don't have to be an avid bird watcher to enjoy a day trip to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. But you may be inspired to pick up the hobby after your visit to Kempton. Eight miles of trails take visitors to deep woodlands and beautiful vistas. Highlights include the view from North Lookout, which stretches for 70 miles, and a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The trail to South Lookout is accessible to all. There are fees to enjoy these trails, but it is well worth the price to enjoy this pristine environmental treasure. It was the world's first refuge for raptors, and over the past 60 years, it has gained international acclaim as a center for conservation, education, and research about these magnificent birds.
