Mount Hope Estate and Winery

Start your roadtrip by traveling back in time and sampling some of Pennsylvania's wines at Mount Hope Estate and Winery. Every autumn, a Renaissance village sprouts up around the Victorian mansion, which also houses interactive theatre during the rest of the year. Costumed performers, plenty of food, games, jousting, and a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre make Mount Hope fun for the whole family. The award-winning wines are a perfect accompaniment to a crisp fall day amid the shady trees, Victorian gardens, and manicured shrubs.

After enjoying the fruits of Pennsylvania's vines, head to lovely, wooded Mount Gretna for dinner and a stroll by the lake. The Timbers features a fireplace dining room amid the pines. A dinner theatre in the summertime, The Timbers is a local favorite for special nights out all year 'round. Tony's Mining Company, in nearby Cornwall, is another great restaurant for an elegant dinner. If you prefer a more casual atmosphere, try the Mt. Gretna Hide-A-Way or the Blue Bird Inn, two local bars with excellent food.

Not ready for dinner yet? Try some other local fun: take a tour of a bologna smokehouse, or check out the truck and tractor pulls, livestock shows, and carriage and buggy auctions at the expo center. A leisurely drive through the countryside is also a pleasant way to spend the day keep an eye out for roadside stands selling pumpkins, squash, and other autumn treats.

Allentown Fairground Farmers Market

Few phrases set the mouth watering like "farm-fresh." At Allentown Fairground Farmers' Market, you can sample the wares of more than 60 merchants, who sell locally grown produce, meats, poultry, flowers, crafts, pies, candy, and snacks. This is a real farmers' market, not some touristy imitation, and you'll know it from the total sensory immersion in all things country. Shop for a fresh picnic lunch, and enjoy some of the best Pennsylvania has to offer.

Afterward, visit a farm museum to see how they did things in the olden days (and thank your lucky stars that you don't have to churn butter or make your own soap!). Don't want to think about hard work? Go for a beer at a local microbrewery, or take the kids to an amusement park.

When it's time to eat, try Hamilton's Family Restaurant for American food or breakfast all day long that?s 24 hours, by the way. Hamilton's is always open. If you're in the mood for a more historic dining experience, try the King George Inn, which has been serving American classics at the crossroads of I-78 and the Northeast Extension since 1756. Built during the French and Indian War, the King George Inn was designated a National Historic Site in 1976.

Clover Hill Vineyards

Live music, lovely scenery, and more great Pennsylvania wines await at Clover Hill Vineyards, the final stop on your roadtrip. More than 20 varieties of wine will keep your taste buds happy as you relax in the bucolic setting. Tour the winery and see how they make what Hemingway called "one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection."

If you're still in the mood for agricultural fun, get lost! In a corn maze, that is - or hit the wine trail again. If that's too much for you, you can always shop at another great farm market. And there's dinner to consider as well - try the New Pied Piper Diner, another 24-hour breakfast joint that also serves steaks and seafood. Or try the Sports Extra Bar and Restaurant, with multiple large-screen televisions and a dance floor in addition to food and spirits.
