Farms, orchards, markets - Allegheny County has more agriculture that you'd expect! Take a roadtrip that shows you the best spots and gets you close to the animals.

Round Hill Park and Exhibit Farm

Round Hill Park is Allegheny County's "show farm," encompassing an 1,100-acre park with walking trails, picnic areas, and a real working exhibit farm. Kids (and parents!) can visit with the animals, take a tour, and see how things work around the farm. See chickens, ducks, horses, sheep, goats, bunnies, pigs, and cows. Visit another farm or two afterwards, or sample the wine at a nearby winery. If you're feeling particularly frisky, head out to a dance hall and show off your country and western line-dancing skills!

If all that farm fun got your appetite worked up, you're probably wondering where to eat. There are plenty of fabulous restaurants in the area; try the Breakaway Cafe for home-cooked meals. Their BYOB policy means you should definitely pick up a bottle of Pennsylvania wine to go with your dinner. The Boston Waterfront and Lounge is also nearby. A large dining room with seating near the fireplace or on the deck makes this place comfortable, and the restaurant is right next to the Yough biking trail perfect for a post-prandial promenade or just for people-watching. There's a dance floor too, with live bands on the weekends. And if you prefer good, old-fashioned American diner food, try the Norwin Diner, which is open 24 hours a day.

Soergel Orchards

Soergel Orchards is a misleading name - the complex is also home to a market, gift barn, and garden center. Shop for baked goods, produce, and garden tools and doodads, or just wander through the greenhouse. The gift selection is unusual and charming, with items that are perfect for the hard-to-shop-for. You could also pet the animals and hit the wine shop! Soergel's offers its own award-winning wines for sale, and you're welcome to taste them and decide which ones you like best. Later, take in some quality children's theatre, or, if you haven't found everything you need for your kitchen yet, stop at another farm or two to shop and tour.

When your farm tours are over, head out to dinner. Quaker Steak and Lube has an outpost in nearby Cranberry, and if anybody in your traveling party is into cars, this is the place to stop! The decor features classic cars and motorcycles suspended from the ceiling, and the wings and beer are justifiably famous. If that's all Greek to you, you might prefer Little Athens, which serves family-style Greek fare, or the Sewickley Cafe, which specializes in seafood and pasta.

Trax Farms Market

Trax Farms is a 630-acre working fruit and vegetable farm that also includes a bakery, a deli, flowers and gifts, and a newly expanded garden shop, greenhouse, and nursery. Since it was founded in 1865, Trax Farms has provided local people and visitors with everything for the kitchen and garden. Shop, sample, and enjoy the busy atmosphere. When you're ready to move on, check out some cool antique toys, go for a leisurely dinner, or explore the smaller farm markets that dot the area.

When it's time to eat, you'll find you have plenty of options. Try the Rhythm House Cafe, which had great food but - maybe more important - a dance floor for country and western dancing. They also host poker games every week. If your tastes are more eastern than western, then Benihana is for you. Thrill to the sight of your dinner flying through the air above your table, only to be chopped to bits by skilled chefs! They call it "eatertainment," and it is truly a sight to behold - and a tasty treat to eat, too!
