Longhouse National

Routes: 321, 59 and Forest Road 262, Warren and McKean County

Experience the most awe-inspiring views in the Allegheny National Forest. This 29-mile loop circles the Kinzua Creek Arm of the Allegheny Reservoir through the Allegheny National Forest. Beautiful hardwood forests and water views from the high plateau make this drive a scenic wonder you’ll never forget.

From the dainty blossoms of the mountain laurel to the blazing colors of autumn, this drive is a vibrant postcard come to life. Even in the winter the contrast of dark green pine needles against the bright white of a new snowfall is picture-perfect.

During your drive, you won't want to miss the Allegheny Reservoir, a 12,080 acre, 27-mile long lake that’s treated anglers to state-record walleye and northern pike. Hiking, biking, hunting, swimming, and good-old picnicking make this the perfect destination.

    Last year, at the age of 52, my wife and I, and friends started kayaking the streams, rivers and lakes of Western PA. We came across this old dam on Henry Run while kayaking the Clarion River this past Memorial Day weekend. There are numerous remote, scenic areas that can only be explored from the water, not to mention the relaxation experienced floating down a lazy stream. PA has stunning beauty if we just stop and look around.

  • Best Memorial Day ever

    The weekend prior we did Jim Thorpe, PA, the coolest little town in the state. For Memorial Day we went to where it all began: Philly! The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, our beloved Phillies and, of course, a "Whiz Wit" at Pat's. The next day was the amazing Art Museum, and, oh yeah, shocking my girlfriend at LOVE Park!

    When we head East for vacation, we always take this old road. The scenery is beautiful, and we like seeing the old highway markers. It's a lot less stressful than the big highways.
