Subterranean Worlds of Wonder - Caves in PA

Vast caverns ensconced deep below the Earth offer some of Pennsylvania’s most spectacular scenery

A journey underground reveals nature’s ancient speleothem artistry, from dramatic stalagmites and stalactites to graceful cascades and flowstones. Commercial caves provide easy access to these widely varied geological wonderlands, and informative tours can be particularly refreshing in summer since year-round temperatures hover in the low 50s.

Two sparkling destinations include crystal-flecked Lost River Caverns in Hellertown and Crystal Cave in Kutztown, the oldest operating and most visited cave in Pennsylvania.

Five expansive rooms and the largest stalagmite in the state distinguish Woodward Cave in Centre County. Rental cabins and an adjacent campground enable visitors to transform a tour into a vacation.

A “living” cave with active, growing formations–one cubic inch every 120 years!–Indian Caverns in Spruce Creek counts “The Frozen Niagara,” the largest flowstone in the Northeast, and cave coral among its dazzling sights. Summer specials include cave photography and flashlights-only tours.
